Dr. Catherine Liegey

Dr. Catherine Liegey grew up in South Salem, New York and currently resides here with her husband, horse, three dogs, two cats and three parakeets. Encouraged by her parents at a young age, she began riding horses. This was the start of a growing affection for animals of all kinds. Prior to attending veterinary school, she found many opportunities to work and volunteer in animal related fields. This included local veterinary practices, horse stables, therapeutic riding programs, and agricultural centers.

In 2014, she moved to the Caribbean island of St. Kitts to attend Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and revered the experience of living in another country while pursuing her professional degree. While there, she participated in leadership roles with several organizations including the Josh Project (a student led group that makes weekly visits to the local pediatric hospital), American Academy of Veterinary Nutrition, American Association of Equine Practitioners, The Green Initiative Club, and various research projects. After receiving a scholarship, she traveled with fellow students to provide veterinary care in underserved areas of Guatemala. For her clinical year, the palm trees of St, Kitts were traded for prairies surrounding Oklahoma State University, driven by an interest in mixed animal practice. While learning from textbooks had immeasurable value, being able to practically apply knowledge was the highlight of her educational path and, thus, reflects her attitude towards teaching. She has been working since 2018 as a mixed animal practitioner, and especially enjoys performing surgery and educating clients on One Health.

Dr. Liegey’s guiding motto and one that she is excited to portray as she joins the educational realm of the veterinary profession is, “People have to know that you care, before they care what you know.”  Her specific interests include One Health, the human-animal bond, and sustainability in the veterinary field. She currently works as a mixed animal practitioner and serves as the Program Coordinator for the CT STATE Norwalk Veterinary Technology Program.
